Urgent request to support “Mori wa Umi no Koibito” (“Forests are lovers of the sea”)


The massive earthquake and tsunami that hit Tohoku in Japan devastated the nation. Today, I ask your urgent support to help continue a very important movement to save lives in the sea of Japan and in the world.

Shigeatsu Hatakeyama is an oyster fisherman in Kesennuma, Miyagi. Since 1989, together with many children and adults, he has been planting trees in the forest to bring life back to the sea. The movement is called “Mori wa Umi no Koibito” (“Forests are lovers of the sea”) and has spread throughout the nation.

You might ask, “Why plant trees to protect the sea?” The answer is that fallen leaves in the forest create vital nutrients for a bountiful sea. The rivers carry them there to feed the plankton, which in turn feed other creatures such as oysters. We must protect forests. They are mothers to every living organism.

Many children and adults alike joined the movement and planted thousands of trees in the forest, and Kesennuma Bay finally returned to what it used to be. Now, the flesh of oysters growing there is a translucent white. The children are especially excited to see that they can make a difference.

Sadly, the tsunami destroyed everything. Countless trees were swept away. So were the oyster cultivation farm and the facilities for educating children. They lost their very foundation. There is no place for generous friends to come back to, where their serious work can continue. Children are losing hope for the future of their sea.

May I appeal to you? It’s urgent. Professor Tanaka from Kyoto University kindly organized a fund-raising team called “Mori wa Umi no Koibito Kinkyu Shien no kai” (“Support group for ‘Forests are lovers of the sea’”). Please make a donation by one of two following ways:

森は海の恋人運動ならびに畠山重篤さんへの緊急支援のお願い

東北は史上空前の言いようのない深刻な事態に至りました。
皆様方の中にはご親族やお知り合い等身近な方が東北太平洋沿岸域に
お住まいになっている方もおられ、
大変心を痛めておられるのではないかと思います。

森は海の恋人運動を1989年以来、
気仙沼大川流域を中心に進めて来られた畠山重篤さんご一家も
大津波の直撃を受け、
心の支えになっていたお母さんを失われ、カキやホタテガイの養殖筏、
5艘の作業船、陸上の施設などは壊滅状態と伺っています。
幸いにもご自宅は高台にあり、浸水を免れ、
3月15日には自宅にも戻られて復旧への第1歩をスタートされました。

森は海の恋人運動は今では小学校5年生の全ての社会の教科書に
掲載されるほど全国に広まり、森と海にこの上なく恵まれた日本が
これから進む道を見定める上でも“国民的財産”と言えるほど
重要な存在となっています。
これまで私たちはこの森は海の恋人運動に多くのことを学び、
大いに励まされてきました。
この運動とこれを支えて来られた牡蠣の森を慕う会の多くの皆さん
想像を絶する極めて厳しい現実に直面されています。

私たち個々にできることは限られていますが、
今こそ人と人のつながりの力を発揮することが
こうした難局を克服する上で不可欠と思われます。
多くの皆さんから何か支援したいとの申し出をいただいており、
本日緊急に「森は海の恋人緊急支援の会」を立ち上げ、
募金を始めることに致しました。

かつて気仙沼流域の環境と人の心を大きく動かして
地域と日本全体に元気を与え続けてきた森は海の恋人運動が
ふたたび不死鳥のように蘇り、気仙沼から東北、
そして日本を元気にする希望の星になるよう
できる限りの支援をできればと願っています。

＜東日本大震災「森は海の恋人運動」継続へのご支援のお願い＞

私達の「森は海の恋人運動」並びに「森は海の恋人植樹祭」は、
皆様の多大なるご協力のもと、本年で23年目を迎えようとしております。

しかしながら、この度の未曽有の震災によって、
たくさんの子供達の笑顔あふれた環境教育フィールド、
気仙沼市唐桑町舞根地区は道路や岸壁が大きく破損、水没し、
この地区の90%近い家屋が津波により跡形もなくその姿を消して
しまいました。また、運動の起点となる水山養殖場は、事務所や船、
養殖漁船やトラック、カキやホタテの養殖施設など、
そのすべてを流失し、運動の起点としての機能を果たすことは、
もはやできません。

森川海と人の連環を取戻し、
将来の自然環境を担う子供たちの「心の木」を植え、育み、
その大きな輪を広げてゆきます「森は海の恋人運動」は今、
運動の継続の帰路に立たされております。

この度、森里海連環学の生みの親である京都大学名誉教授　田中克先生のご厚意により「森は海の恋人緊急支援の会」が設立され、
